The game is played with five six-sided dice. The dice set used in Poker Dice has playing card options (9, 10, J, K, Q, A) in stead of numbers. Each player takes 10 turns to score. I love dice games, so in the course of collecting other types of poker dice I thought these might be an interesting variation. My understanding of 'Spanish Poker' was that it's close to Hold'em in play, but the game instructions that came with the dice don't read like this game is anything like that.

Overview
Anyone familiar with poker and Yahtzee will understand the rules for poker dice very quickly. It borrows from poker in that different combinations of dice are better than others, while fans of Yahtzee will recognize the ability to re-roll dice to get the best possible combination. It’s a great way to teach children about probabilities and the fact each player takes their turn means it helps with getting children to be patient and wait for their turn.
How to Play
Spanish Poker Dice Game
If you follow the poker dice rules strictly, you’ll need to find a set of actual poker dice. Poker dice are the same as regular dice in shape, but instead of dots, they have pictures of playing cards on each side. The sides will range from ace to nine with the rest of the cards not counting for anything. However, more flexible poker dice rules allow you to play with a regular set of five dice.
Each player takes a turn rolling the five dice. They are then allowed to save any dice that they feel will help them make a good hand, and re-roll any number of dice. After the second roll, they can save any dice and re-roll for a third time, including any dice that they saved from the first roll. After three rolls, the turn is over and the scorekeeper records their best hand. The combinations in scoring order are:
- Five of a kind – either five of the same card or number
- Four of a kind – four dice showing the same card or number
- Full house – three of one kind and two of another
- Straight – if you’re playing with cards, this is a run of all five dice from ace to ten or king to nine. If you’re playing with regular dice, this is a run from one to five or two to six.
- Three of a kind
- Two pairs – two pairs of different numbers
- Pair
- Highest dice
Each player has one turn per round, and the game can be played over as many rounds as you like.
Winning the Game
A player wins a round by having the best combination of dice. Poker dice rules say that in the event of a tie, the actual numbers or cards determine a winner. For example, a player who gets three sixes would beat a player who gets three fives. You can also get the players to roll again, or play Russian Roulette, rolling one dice each with the highest number winning.
Strategies
Poker dice is largely a game of luck, but players can change their fortunes by saving certain combinations. It is normal for players to get good combinations, so you should always be looking to use all five dice in each round to really challenge your opponent. Five of a kind is tough, but collecting dice that come up the same will always work to your advantage as so many of the combinations reward dice with the same card or number.
Final Thoughts
The poker dice rules make it a very simple game to learn and rolling the dice makes sure that each player has an equal chance of doing well at the game. It makes a good introduction to poker and Yahtzee and introduces your children to probabilities and math problems. All in all, a great way to spend a rainy afternoon!

Players want to get the highest hand, (that is greatest number of the higher values card). The highest possible hand is 10 Kings. Five playing dice are used. The letter 'K' is used to represent King, 'Q' for Queen, 'J' for Jack, '8 dots' for eight, '7 dots' for Seven, and a solid Dot' for the Ace (also being a wild card).
